The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has unveiled Swedish tactician Kim Lars Björkegren as the new head coach of the Black Queens, the national women’s football team.

Björkegren, a seasoned coach with nearly two decades of experience, takes over from Nora Häuptle, whose tenure ended in December 2024 following the expiration of her contract with the GFA.

The announcement was made in a statement released by the GFA on Tuesday, January 14, confirming the Swedish coach’s appointment to lead the team into a new chapter.

“Swedish Football Coach, Kim Lars Björkegren, has been appointed new Head Coach of the Senior National Female team, the Black Queens. He replaces erstwhile Coach, Nora Häuptle, whose contract with the GFA expired at the end of December 2024,” the statement read.

Björkegren’s journey in football began as a player in his hometown club in Ljungsbro, Sweden, and later with Allsvenska Ã…tvidabergs FF, then a top-flight Swedish side.

However, an injury at the age of 22 cut short his playing career, leading him to pivot into coaching—a decision that has since defined his professional life.

Armed with a UEFA License A coaching certificate, Björkegren has built an impressive résumé over 18 years, coaching both domestically in Sweden and internationally.

Among his notable achievements is guiding Apollon Ladies to a league title in Cyprus and clinching the Damallsvenskan championship with Linköpings FC in Sweden.

His excellence in the 2020-2021 season earned him the Coach of the Season accolade in Cyprus.

He is now taking charge of the Black Queens and will be expected to continue the excellent work done by coach Nora Hauptle before her departure.
