Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Nana Sarfo Oduro has hinted at the imminent return of Chinese-owned pay-TV operator, StarTimes as the official broadcaster of the Ghana Premier League.
StarTimes who previously held the broadcast rights for the Ghana Premier League are currently not airing the country’s top flight due to the company’s outstanding debt of nearly $1 million.
However, speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Sarfo Oduro revealed that negotiations with the pay-TV giant are nearing completion.
He hinted that the deal is likely to be finalized in time for the second round of the ongoing 2024/25 league season.
“As I speak to you, we are almost closing up with StarTimes, and it is likely they will return in the second round to broadcast our games,” he said.
Their potential return is expected to rejuvenate the league’s media presence and enhance access for fans worldwide. StarTimes are also expected to broadcast the FA Cup games.
Following the switch to free-to-air broadcasters, the broadcast quality of the Ghana Premier League opening matchday has faced widespread criticism for its poor standard.
