The Motorcycle Couriers Union of Ghana (MCUG) has submitted a petition to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, expressing concern over what it describes as restrictive police operations aimed at motorcyclists, particularly couriers, across the country.
In a letter signed by the General Secretary, Abugri Timothy Agengri, the union acknowledged the importance of maintaining law and order.
However, MCUG noted that the current approach, characterised by frequent roadblocks and stops, is causing unnecessary delays and adversely affecting their work.
The union highlighted that its members play a vital role in facilitating the delivery of goods and services in cities and contribute significantly to Ghana’s economy.
The statement stressed that numerous riders have reported instances of harassment and extortion by police personnel and are therefore demanding immediate action.
Additionally, the union is calling for a roundtable engagement with the police leadership to deliberate on the concerns raised and develop a cooperative framework that aligns effective law enforcement with the operational needs of the courier sector.
