Former Black Galaxies coach Annor Walker has revealed how he discovered ‘financially troubled’ Black Stars No.1 goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare.

Walker, a former Great Olympics coach recounted that he first noticed Asare’s talent when he was playing for Sporting Mirren.

Recognising his potential, he approached the now Hearts of Oak shot-stopper and encouraged him to join his club Great Olympics, where Annor Walker was coaching at the time.

Despite financial difficulties at Great Olympics, Walker was determined to support Asare in his development, he recalled.

“There were financial challenges, but I told him I would support him,” Walker told Takoradi-based Oil City Radio

He even had to assist Asare with transportation after training sessions, demonstrating his commitment to the young goalkeeper’s growth.

Reflecting on Asare’s journey to becoming the Black Stars’ top goalkeeper, Walker expressed his belief that Asare’s success is due to perfect timing, saying, “We always say God’s time is the best, so I believe this is the right time for Benjamin Asare.”

The Hearts of Oak goalkeeper has enjoyed rave reviews after his sterling performances for Ghana during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, where he clocked clean sheets in two matches.

Following his exploits,  Otto Addo confirmed that Benjamin Asare will remain as the first choice goalkeeper for the Black Stars.

He is now expected to keep the post against Chad and Mali in the next round of the qualifiers in September.
