President John Mahama has renamed the Ministry of Youth and Sports to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation as part of an institutional restructuring by government.
In the exercise of the president’s powers under section 11 (3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D. Law 327), Mahama’s decision effectively ends the union of sports and youth sectors as one Ministry.
The decision also confirmed that the Youth Ministry will now stand alone, under the name “Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment”.
In total, there are twenty-three ministries, seven fewer than the previous government’s (thirty).
Meanwhile, President John Mahama is expected to name a new Sports Minister next week, as among the next batch of ministerial appointments.
Former Sports Minister Nii Lantey Vanderpuije has been widely tipped to be named as sector minister.
