Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member, Wilfred Osei Kweku ‘Palmer,’ has praised the appointment of Winfried Schäfer to the newly restructured Black Stars technical team.

The experienced German coach, who guided Cameroon to victory in the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), has been named both the technical advisor and technical director for the senior national team and the GFA.

Reacting to Schäfer’s appointment, Palmer revealed that during his tenure on the Executive Council, Schäfer was already being considered as a potential head coach for Ghana.

“The technical direction of the team has changed, but Winfried Schäfer is a good coach. Even during our time, we had plans to bring him on board,” he told Sporty FM.

Addressing concerns about Schäfer’s inactivity since his last coaching role in 2021, Palmer dismissed any doubts, stating, “A technically good coach remains technically good.”

Despite the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON—marking their first absence from the tournament in two decades—the GFA Executive Council has decided to retain Otto Addo as head coach.
