Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum has defended the decision to keep Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars despite growing criticism.
Addo, who was reappointed in March 2024 with a three-year contract and an option for a two-year extension, came under fire after failing to lead Ghana to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 20 years.
The Black Stars finished bottom of Group F with only three points, recording three defeats and three draws.
In spite of the backlash, the GFA has decided to retain the former Borussia Dortmund assistant coach and has strengthened the technical staff by bringing in Winfried Schäfer as a technical advisor.
“Based on the results, one can easily conclude that Otto Addo should not have been there but before his appointment, there was an announcement that there would be tough times,” Asante-Twum told Sporty FM.
“In his report, Otto Addo cited tactics, late arrivals and injuries as some of the specific reasons for Ghana’s failure to qualify for the AFCON,” he added.
In addition, Desmond Offei, the current head coach of the Ghana U-20 team, has been promoted to the Black Stars’ technical bench as an assistant coach, taking over from German Joseph Laumann.
Offei will join assistants John Paintsil and Fatawu Dauda, who will continue their roles under Addo.
Kris Perquy will assume the role of the team’s psychologist, while Gregory De Grauwe will serve as the video analyst.
