Veteran football administrator, Wilfred Osei Kweku ‘Palmer’ has questioned the rationale for the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) decision to retain Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars.

Addo, who was reappointed in March 2024 on a three-year contract with an optional two-year extension, has faced mounting pressure to step down following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Black Stars endured a disappointing qualification campaign, finishing at the bottom of Group F with three draws and three defeats from six matches.

Despite widespread calls for his dismissal, the GFA’s Executive Council has opted to keep Addo in charge, strengthening the technical team as they prepare for the resumption of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March.

However, in an interview, Osei Kweku ‘Palmer’ questioned the rationale behind the GFA’s decision, expressing doubts about Addo’s ability to guide the team to the World Cup.

“I don’t have too much confidence in Otto Addo and the decision to retain is risky,” he told Sporty FM.

“For the Black Stars to play AFCON qualifiers without a win is just unacceptable and there is no way he should have been retained,” he added.

To bolster the coaching setup, John Paintsil and Desmond Ofei have been appointed as first and second assistant coaches, respectively.

Fatau Dauda will continue as the goalkeepers’ trainer, while experienced German tactician Winfried Schaffer, who led Cameroon to the 2002 AFCON title, has been named technical advisor and football director for both the Black Stars and the GFA.

Additionally, Kris Perquy has been appointed as the team’s psychologist, and Gregory De Grauwe will take on the role of video analyst.

Ghana will face Chad and Madagascar in their next round of World Cup qualifying matches next month.
