Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) Chairman, Kudjoe Fianoo, has expressed deep concern over the current state of football in Ghana, following the Black Stars’ poor showing in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The senior national team has struggled throughout the qualifiers, with a disappointing loss to Angola and a goalless draw against Niger.

Their recent performances against Sudan have added to the woes, as they failed to secure a win in both matches. In the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium, the game ended in a 0-0 draw, followed by a 2-0 defeat in the return fixture at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya.

Reflecting on these performances, Fianoo, a veteran football administrator and former CEO of AshantiGold SC, criticized the state of football in the country.

“Ghana football and its entirety is in a mess,” he told Kumasi-based Akoma FM. “We haven’t seen anything yet. If the FA continues with this family and friends system, this is what we will get.

“These individuals (Executive Council) came solely to benefit themselves, not to improve our game.

Fianoo called for change, urging stakeholders to challenge the status quo.

“Things can only change if we all stop “the yes sir, master thing” and speak truth to authority,” he added.

Ghana currently sits third in Group F with just two points. To keep their qualification hopes alive, they must win their final two matches against Niger and Angola next month.

However, they also need Sudan to lose their remaining games to have a shot at reaching the tournament in Morocco next year.
