
Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams has revealed that he is yet to know whether government was engaged before a decision was made to retain Otto Addo as Black Stars coach.
The 49-year-old who was reappointed on a three-year deal with an option of two year deal has come under severe pressure after failing to guide the senior national team to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament for the first time in two decades.
Ghana after six games played finished at the bottom of Group F with three points, recording three defeats and three draws.
Following the horrendous performance of Otto Addo, the masses called for the dismissal of the former Borussia Dortmund assistant coach.
However, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in a statement indicated that Otto Addo will be retained as the head coach of the senior national team while the technical team has been beefed up.
But speaking in an interview, Kofi Adam, who is the member of Parliament for the people of Buem constituency has no information on what accounted for the decision to retain the former Ghana international.
According to him, he is yet to know if government was officially engaged before the decision was made.
“The truth is that when the Executive Council took the decision, I was not named as the Sports Minister-designate but after the announcement, I engaged some members in the transitional team in the area of sports and they were not consulted on the decision to retain Otto Addo,” he told Sporty FM.
“I am yet to talk to the Chief Of Staff [Julius Debrah] since he was the first minister to be named on whether there was an engagement with him at all.
“I have been told Kurt Okraku is not in town but when he returns, we will discuss this issue and I will need more answers to this decision,” he added.
Winfried Schaffer has been confirmed as the technical advisor and football director for the Black Stars and the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Additionally, Desmond Offei, the current head coach of Ghana’s U20 team, has been promoted to the Black Stars’ technical bench as an assistant coach, replacing German Joseph Laumann. Offei will join assistants John Paintsil and Fatawu Dauda, who will continue in their roles under Otto Addo.
Kris Perquy will serve as the team’s psychologist, while Gregory De Grauwe will take on the role of video analyst.
