{"id":861,"date":"2024-08-02T00:52:22","date_gmt":"2024-08-02T00:52:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbmediaonline.com\/?p=861"},"modified":"2024-08-02T00:52:22","modified_gmt":"2024-08-02T00:52:22","slug":"minority-criticizes-amin-adam-says-ghanaians-expected-e-levy-and-other-taxes-to-be-scrapped","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbmediaonline.com\/?p=861","title":{"rendered":"Minority criticizes Amin Adam, says Ghanaians expected e-levy and other taxes to be scrapped&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/uwordpressmedia.blob.core.windows.net\/uwordpressmedia01\/2024\/08\/ato-forson-in-parliament-750x375-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwordpressmedia.blob.core.windows.net\/uwordpressmedia01\/2024\/08\/ato-forson-in-parliament-750x375-1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwordpressmedia.blob.core.windows.net\/uwordpressmedia01\/2024\/08\/ato-forson-in-parliament-750x375-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minority in Parliament says the government missed a fine opportunity to abolish taxes such as e-levy which has suffocated Ghanaians in recent times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minority Leader, Dr cassiel Ato Forson, who bemoaned the government\u2019s failure to scrap some taxes indicated that apart from the E-levy, Ghanaians expected taxes such as Emission Levy, and COVID Levy to be removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on the floor of Parliament after the mid-year budget statement by Finance Minister, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam on Tuesday, July 23, the Ejumako Enyan Essian lawmaker accused the Akufo-Addo-led administration of lacking ideas to handle the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According him, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration is heading into opposition because of their lack of ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGhanaians expected that the government would have removed a number of taxes because businesses are packing out of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe taxes include covid levy, e-levy, \u2018borla\u2019 tax, tax on domestic electricity, emission levy. This is a missed opportunity. They are bereft of ideas, you are on your way to opposition,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the mid-year budget presentation, the Finance Minister said that the provisional total debt stock of Ghana stood at GH\u00a2742 billion, representing US$50.9 billion as of June 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This represents 70.6 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) he said during the 2024 mid-year budget review in parliament on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe stock consists of external debt of GH\u00a2452.0 billion and domestic debt of GH\u00a2290.0 billion, representing 60.9 percent and 39.1 percent of the total debt stock, respectively. As a percentage of GDP, external and domestic debt represented 43.0 percent and 27.6 percent, respectively.
