{"id":3238,"date":"2024-08-22T21:28:27","date_gmt":"2024-08-22T21:28:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbmediaonline.com\/?p=3238"},"modified":"2024-08-22T21:28:28","modified_gmt":"2024-08-22T21:28:28","slug":"2024-bece-marking-delayed-due-to-waec-debt-says-peter-nortsu-kotoe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbmediaonline.com\/?p=3238","title":{"rendered":"2024 BECE marking delayed due to WAEC debt, says Peter Nortsu-Kotoe&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/uwordpressmedia.blob.core.windows.net\/uwordpressmedia01\/2024\/08\/BECE-Copy-696x473-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwordpressmedia.blob.core.windows.net\/uwordpressmedia01\/2024\/08\/BECE-Copy-696x473-1.jpg 696w, https:\/\/uwordpressmedia.blob.core.windows.net\/uwordpressmedia01\/2024\/08\/BECE-Copy-696x473-1-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minority in Parliament has revealed that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has postponed marking the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) scripts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a press briefing on Thursday, August 22, Ranking Member of the Education Committee, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe attributed the postponement to the lack of funds caused by the government\u2019s indebtedness to the exam body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of June, the government owed the examination body GH\u20b5300 million for services provided from 2022 up to this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He demanded that the government settle this debt immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs we speak, WAEC had to postpone the marking of BECE scripts from this month \u2013 August to September because they don\u2019t have the funds to do the coordination and marking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey still owe WAEC for the BECE and we are demanding that the government pays this money to WAEC so that they can organise the marking in time,\u201d he demanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him, the delay in marking the scripts will lead to the disruption of the academic calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo we are asking the government to release the money to WAEC as urgently as they can so that the marking can take place for our young ones to enter Senior high schools in good time,\u201d he pleaded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be recalled the exams itself almost suffered a setback due to the government\u2019s indebtedness to WAEC until the government released part of the money a few weeks before the examination.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Minority in Parliament has revealed that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has postponed marking the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) scripts.
