Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams says he will engage the Ghana Football Association over the decision to maintain Otto Addo despite terrible data under his reign.
Despite failing to secure qualification to the AFCON 2025, the domestic football governing body (GFA) opted to retain the former Ghana international, while ringing major changes to the technical team.
Among the key appointments, seasoned German tactician Wilfried Schafer, who coached Cameroon to AFCON victory in 2002 was named the technical advisor for the Black Stars. He will also serve as the football director for the GFA.
Desmond Ofei, the current head coach of Ghana’s U20 team, joins the Black Stars’ technical bench as an assistant coach, replacing Joseph Lauman.
He will work alongside assistants John Pantsil and Fatawu Dauda, who have retained their roles under head coach Otto Addo.
Speaking on Metro TV, Kofi Adams disclosed he will engage the FA as to why Otto Addo retained his role as the head coach of the national team despite his uninspiring performances.
“Black Stars data is very poor, terrible under Otto Addo. If we were looking at the data only, there is no way this decision would have been made. That is why the GFA took a decision to do away with the entire technical team. So it was surprising that, the head of the technical team was maintained and the rest were asked to leave.
“So we’ll check. You have the data, and everyone who looks at it will notice our performance has not been good enough. Maybe, something informed that decision, being it financial or some enhancement of technical capacity. So an engagement will necessarily let us know what led to that decision” he added.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars next competitive matches will be against Chad and Madagascar in March in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Currently, Ghana sits second in Group I but tied on 9 points with Comoros after four matches.
