The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) has dismissed a petition that sought to disqualify John Kofi Ansah, a chairman aspirant, from contesting in the association’s upcoming elections, scheduled to take place on January 21, 2025.
A petition was submitted against John Ansah, citing his arraignment before a Circuit Court for alleged offenses involving match ticket racketeering as far back as 1996 and match manipulation in 2016.
According to the GHALCA Election Committee , the petitioner referenced Articles 9 (1) (b) and 9 (1) (h) of the GHALCA Constitution, which mandate members to ‘uphold a high moral standard and not engage in any conduct that would bring the Association into public ridicule’.
However, after reviewing the petition and its grounds, GHALCA found no valid reason to disqualify John Kofi Ansah, thus clearing the path for him to participate in the election, slated for January 21, 2025.
“The petition lacks sufficient evidence to substantiate any conviction of the Respondent. Disqualifying a candidate solely based on unproven allegations or media reports would be unduly harsh. The candidate provided the Committee with a police clearance report dated 30th December, 2024, and a Court ruling as evidence of his acquittal and discharge by an Accra Circuit Court. The candidate, John Ansah is cleared to contest the election.” a conclusive verdict decision by GHALCA on Wednesday January 15, 2024, read.
This decision allows Mr. Ansah to remain in the race for the GHALCA chairmanship, and the election process will proceed with him as a candidate.
John Ansah, who is vying for the position of chairman in the GHALCA elections, faced this petition questioning his eligibility or qualifications. However, the association found no grounds to uphold the petition, allowing Ansah to continue his candidacy for the position.
This dismissal implies that John Ansah remains eligible to compete in the elections, and it signals that the election process will move forward with him as the leading candidate.
Ansah is vying to replace outgoing chairman Kudjoe Fianoo, who has held the position for eight years. The election will see 134 members vote, with 36 from the Premier League, 48 from Division One, 30 from the Regional Football Associations (RFAs), and 20 from the Women’s Premier League.
