Former Ghana coach, CK Akonnor says he would be surprised if the Black Stars fail to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

The Black Stars, who are chasing to end the country’s 43-year trophy drought kicked off their qualifying games on a disappointing note.

The senior national team suffered a 1-0 defeat against Angola in their opener at the Baba Yara Stadium before a 1-1 draw against Niger in their second Group F game in Berkane.

These results leave Otto Addo and his charges at the 3rd spot with just a point.

However, Akonnor speaking to Graphic Sports insisted that qualifying for the AFCON tournament should not be a problem for the team but added that he would be surprised if the Black Stars does not secure qualification for the tournament despite the difficult start.

“Qualifying should not be a problem. I will be surprised if they don’t qualify, but we have to do well when we play in the competition proper,” the former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak coach said.

The Black Stars will resume their qualifying games with a doubleheader against Sudan. The first leg of the doubleheader will take place at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, October 10, with the return leg set for October 14 at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya.

The team will continue their training session at the Accra Sports Stadium later today after opening camp on Monday with 11 players.

However, eight players joined the team on Tuesday morning with the rest of the players expected to join the team later today.

The 2025 AFCON will be hosted in Morocco.
