Former Ghana international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has urged for a dignified exit for Black Stars captain Andre Ayew amid growing calls for his retirement from the national team.
Ayew, who has been with the Black Stars since 2007, has not received a call-up since March 2024, despite impressive club-level form with Le Havre in the French Ligue 1.
The 35-year-old has contributed five goals this season, scoring four, yet his future with the national team remains uncertain.
With Otto Addo expected to name a new Black Stars captain, reports suggest Jordan Ayew is in line to take over, fueling speculation that Andre may not be invited for upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.
Speaking on Sporty FM’s Drive Show, Agyemang-Badu insisted that the decision to continue or step aside should be left to Ayew.
“Andre knows his body more than I do. If he feels good, is performing well for his club, and the coach wants him, fine. The decision to continue or stop should be his. I just don’t want anyone to leave the national team with bitterness,” Agyemang-Badu stated.
Andre Ayew is Ghana’s most capped player with over 120 appearances, having played in multiple AFCON tournaments and World Cups. Whether he will get another chance with the Black Stars remains to be seen.
